Hurray!

I just received notification the three of my double dactyl poems will be published in the 2015 Best of the Burlington Writers Workshop! It is unbelievable that my first publication will be poetry and not fantasy. I said as recently as two months ago that I don’t “do” poetry. I guess I can’t say that any more. The funny thing is that I think my other poems in the Pantoum form are probably better as poetry, but I guess irreverence with a tiny flair gets more noticed. We were limited to providing three poems in the selection process, and I felt my double dactyls were sufficiently offbeat that they might get more notice than serious poems up against people who had been “doing” poetry for a very long time. Who knows?

I will share with you, once they are published, the winning poems. I cannot before publication, because BWW will only publish previously unpublished work. So you can look forward to some diversion in a few months. I know the launch party is April 3 (will they ask me to read?) so that publication will happen before that. So don’t hold your breath.

But here is one of the pantoums:

Pantoum on the Waning Year

When the old year wanes and dies
So much has gone before
Terrifying and thankfully gone
With death of innocence and age

So much has gone before
A history of neglect and horror
With death of innocence and age
Too many echoes of red and black

A history of neglect and horror
Power corrupting absolutely
Too many echoes of red and black
Military and police conjoined

Power corrupting absolutely
Overruling common good
Military and police conjoined
Simple protests of awful size

Overruling common good
Overreaching to control
Simple protests of awful size
Teargas and fire engines

Overreaching to control
When the old year wanes and dies
Teargas and fire engines
Terrifying and thankfully gone
