The test from Writing 101 today:
You stumble upon a random letter on the path. You read it. It affects you deeply, and you wish it could be returned to the person to which it’s addressed. Write a story about this encounter.
The letter is addressed to “Dear Winnie” and it is signed Adam. It is a consolation letter about the death of Winnie’s husband, who apparently used to work with Adam. There is a line that Adam is the last of them. I wonder what that means. He says that what they did will not be looked on kindly by later generations. This makes me curious. But as I read further, I see that they were chemists in the years between World War 2 and the Korean War, that they were working for the government under rules established for the Manhattan Program. This is sounding more and more serious. But why did they all die? Except Adam? And who is Winnie, other than Bill’s widow? Why would this letter be on the sidewalk? Oh, I hope she’s all right and this letter didn’t upset her too much! I really want to get it back to her, because this sounds important and sad for her. To lose her husband! I wonder if they had any children?
